  • The Greek war of independence (1821–1829), also known as the Greek Revolution was a successful war waged by the Greeks to win independence for Greece from the Ottoman Empire. Greeks were later assisted by the Russian Empire, France, Great Britain and several other European powers, while the Ottomans were aided by their vassals, Egypt, Algeria etc.
  • Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since the 15th century. Growth of revolutionary in Europe sparked off a struggle for independence among st the Greeks which began in 1821. The object of the struggle was to expel Turks from Europe and to establish old Greek eastern empire.
  • Nationalists in Greece got support from other Greeks living in exile and also from many West Europeans who had sympathies for ancient Greek culture. The Greeks were supported by the West European countries like the French Kingdom, Great Britain and Russian Empire.

  • Poets and artists lauded Greece as the cradle of European civilization and mobilized public opinion to support its struggle against a Muslim empire. The English poet Lord Byron organised funds and later went to fight in the war.
  • The Treaty of Constantinople of 1832 recognized Greece as an independent nation. Its independence was guaranteed by Russia, England and France.
